Once Upon A Festival.
Once
upon a time, a long, long time ago there was a little country town that
wanted to hold a special event. It had to be an event that would bring
the community and tourists together for fun and frivolity.
What sort of event could be held, asked some of the residents?
We want it to link in with our history. We want it to link with our
rural culture. We want it to bring all facets of our community together;
young and not so young or even very old, short and tall, rich and not so
rich, left handed and right handed, the athletic or non athletic.
So they thought and they thought.
Finally a recommendation was made to the Business and Tourism Committee
and it was included in the towns marketing plan. The idea was for a
festival that would celebrate the fact that one of Australia’s most
famous authors, Colin Thiele, was born in the town and had written many
stories inspired by his childhood years growing up in Eudunda.
The answer: a biannual Storytelling Festival.
So a committee of willing volunteers was assembled, a budget allocated
and the planning work began.
So now the Eudunda Storytelling Festival will be held on the weekend of
the 13th -15th of October 2006 and is supported by SA Events. The
weekend program will consist of Campfire Yarning, Book Readings for
Kids, storytelling performances by Bill Swampy Marsh and storytellers
from the Storytellers Guild of SA, as well as local identities giving it
a go. There will be variety performances, folk telling through music,
oral recordings, displays, a recording of an interview with Colin
Thiele, an interactive storytelling game called Dungeons and Dragons
which you can join in and lots more.
With the sad news of Colin Thiele’s passing the festival will now be
dedicated in his memory. In mid August Colin was updated on the
festivals progress. He was very supportive of the festival, autographing
some of his books for a raffle prize. Colin was pleased that Campfire
Yarning was to be included in the program, as this brought back fond
memories of his younger days when an old college professor of his would
organise campfire nights and everyone would sit around telling stories
and drinking tea.
Come and join in the storytelling fun so we can continue to tell stories
into the future and all live happily ever after…
